In today’s fast-paced and constantly changing work environments, individuals are expected to have a certain set of skills and strengths to be successful. However, for adults with dyslexia, keeping up with the demands of their jobs can be overwhelming and stressful. Individuals with dyslexia often experience difficulties with working memory, auditory memory, organization, planning, time management, sequencing, and following processes and systems. In such situations, Workplace Assessments can be incredibly beneficial, providing adults with dyslexia the necessary support to succeed in their workplaces.

If you’re an adult with dyslexia looking to receive support through a Workplace Assessment, the first step is to apply for the Access to Work scheme. This government-funded initiative provides financial assistance to organizations and self-employed individuals to make reasonable adjustments to their workplaces, making it easier for people with disabilities, including dyslexia, to succeed at work. The scheme is managed by the Department of Work and Pensions and can be accessed through Job Centres. To be eligible for this support, you must have been working in your current role for at least two weeks. While there is no need to have a dyslexia diagnosis to apply for this support, having a clear understanding of your difficulties and the recommendations for support can be helpful. You will need to describe the aspects of your work that you find challenging, as well as provide your employer’s and line manager’s contact details.

Once you have applied for the Access to Work scheme, a workplace assessor will be in touch within two weeks to arrange a Workplace Assessment meeting. During this meeting, which usually lasts between 45 and 90 minutes, you will not be asked to complete any tests. Instead, the assessor will ask you questions about your disability, general health, and the requirements of your job role. They will want to know about your strengths, the difficulties you are experiencing at work, and the support you currently have or coping strategies you use. They may also request specific details about your job role, including a copy of your job description, and may observe you completing your work or take photographs.

After the assessment meeting, the assessor will contact your employer to discuss the reasonable adjustments that can be made to support you in your workplace. The assessor will then compile their recommendations in a report, which will include a detailed workplace skills training program covering aspects of literacy related to the job role, such as data entry, research skills, report reading and writing, and reading comprehension. The report will also provide details of general work skills, such as time management, contributing to meetings, understanding instructions, and organization. It may also recommend a specific training provider and a training program. Additionally, the report may include ICT and assistive technology recommendations, as well as detailed recommendations for your employer regarding reasonable adjustments and their legal obligations towards employees with specific learning difficulties like dyslexia.

The recommendations may include resources such as specific software, coaching, or mentoring. In most cases, the organisation will cover the first £1000 towards the cost of any resources or equipment, as well as training to show you how to use the and Access to Work will fund the remaining costs over £1000.
