Dyslexia is a neurological condition that affects a person’s ability to read, write, and spell. Students with dyslexia often struggle with tasks that involve a lot of written work, such as planning, composition, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. However, there is a visual way of structuring information that can help overcome these difficulties: mind mapping.

Last weeks blog covered the benefits of mind mapping and provide some tips for making effective mind maps. This video has a number of useful tips and guidance to help to develop mind maps:

Software and Apps

There are a number of software programmes that enable mind maps to be created electronically. This not only saves space, but also enables the combining and linking different maps together, so enables users to focus upon one aspect of a large and complex system represented by a web of mind maps. In addition, they enable to inclusion of other documents and resources such as audio and video files or links to key websites. The following websites have useful mind mapping resources:

However, these are not for everyone. Some people find these programmes too constricting as they have limited options, such as a set number of images. Most don’t allow you to draw with anything other than your mouse. Whilst some of the software is free, it might require you to purchase add-ons and regardless of which every product you use, it will take some time to learn. However if you do not like drawing and are IT literate, these programmes could be useful to investigate further.
